Refugee Treatment Group

Dear Friends and Colleagues;

Several clinicians have banded together to provide ongoing psychotherapy for international survivors of trauma and refugees in the East Bay, CA. There is a much greater need for treatment for this group than there are available providers (one of the few projects serving this community is the Partnership for Trauma Recovery, which is a new non-profit organization in Berkeley providing psychological and psychosocial care for international survivors of human rights abuses.) We have formed around the idea of providing one hour of pro bono treatment per week for as long as the person needs. In addition, our group of licensed clinicians meets once per month to discuss psychotherapy, cultural implications, theoretical perspectives, and support when trying to meet the needs of this population. Each of our clinicians brings a level of appreciation regarding the pressures brought to bear when old and new cultures clash, leading to experiences of worry and isolation.

As those of you who have done this work know, this form of treatment has many complications. These complications include working with often unspeakable trauma, bridging significant cultural divides, navigating head-spinning dislocations, and handling uncomfortable geopolitical realities, to name but a few. We meet to work through these complicated experiences while acknowledging that this particular group of people needs to be helped.

Those of you who are interested can contact me. Currently, our seven active members are all seeing someone. However, more immigrants and refugees need services, so we need more members. If you know of others who would be interested, please forward this to them.

We are open to clinicians who want to join our group:
